Abstract

Background and Aim: The selection of a correct career path is one of the main challenges of student life, in which work volition plays a decisive role in the quality of this decision-making and in facilitating the individual’s career path. The purpose of the present study was to examine the psychometric properties of the Work Volition Scale- Student Version.
Methods: The research design of the present study was descriptive-applied and considered a psychometric study. The statistical population of the study included all secondary school students in Kermanshah Province during the 2023–2024 academic year. Among them, 471 students (305 girls and 166 boys) were selected through cluster sampling and based on the minimum recommended sample size suggested for factor analysis. Data were collected using the Work Volition Scale-Student Version, Career Decision-Making Self-Efficacy, and Academic Burnout, Confirmatory factor analysis, Cronbach’s alpha coefficient, composite reliability, and Pearson correlation were conducted to examine convergent and divergent validity, using SPSS-27 and AMOS-24.
Results: The results showed that the factor structure of the Work Volition Scale was confirmed using structural equation modeling. The scale also demonstrated convergent validity, indicated by a positive and significant correlation with career decision-making self-efficacy, and divergent validity, indicated by a negative and significant correlation with academic burnout. In addition, the results showed that the Work Volition Scale had acceptable internal consistency.
Conclusion: The results of the present study confirm the validity and reliability of the student version of the Work Volition Scale for measuring work volition in students across the two dimensions of volition and constraint. This scale is applicable in educational and vocational research and can be utilized by school counselors and vocational counseling specialists in educational and vocational counseling, assessment, and planning processes.
